A
long-standing community supporter in Wellford, South Carolina, Johnsons Hardware
traces its beginnings to October 1929, when W. A. Tom Johnson went to
work in Moore-Howe Company, a general merchandise store serving the textile mill community
of Jackson Mills, SC. The difficulties of the Depression years didn't daunt Toms
spirit for enterprise. He held through those turbulent times and led the business into
growth in the coming decades. Incorporated in 1945 as H & J Company, the operation
continued as a general merchandise store until Mr. Johnson secured Mr. Howes part of
the corporation and opened Johnsons Hardware in 1952.
In 1959, Johnsons Hardware moved into a new building at 236
Tucapau Road. This allowed the business to expand its merchandise, with lawn mowers and
later home electronics finding their way onto the sales floor. Johnsons Hardware
joined a hardware co-op to serve its customers better, and, in April of 1995, joined Ace
Hardware to position the company for the 21st century.
Bruce Johnson, Toms son, joined the business in 1966, and now Bruces son
Chad is also a member of the Johnsons Ace Hardware team.
